FRIDAY JUNE 6, 2003
Warriors v Sharks
VENUE & TIME: Ericsson Stadium, Saturday night - 19:30 AEST
HEAD TO HEAD: Played 13, Sharks 7, Warriors 6.
COVERAGE: Fox
LAST TIME: Warriors 16 - Sharks 10 at Telstra Stadium, semi-final, 2002.
WALKING WOUNDED
The Sharks have lost prop Jason Stevens for up to a month with a leg injury, while centre Phil Bailey will be required for NSW Origin duties. Forward Carl Lovell is out for another two weeks with a hamstring problem.
For the Warriors, coach Daniel Andreson has axed three players due to poor form after last week's loss to the Panthers. Injury remains a problem in the forwards for the club with no sign of a return from big second-rower Ali Lauitiiti (arm) and the loss of Awen Guttenbeil for another four weeks with an ankle problem.
FORM
The Sharks' winning streak of three came to an end last week against the Raiders. The game was theirs for the taking, but mindless errors proved costly against one of the more patient teams in the league. They gave a perfect lesson on how to throw away a football game.
The Warriors have now lost four of their past five matches, but somehow remain in the top-eight. Not only did they miss 39 tackles against the Panthers last week, but they lacked any real potency with the ball in hand. Confidence seems at its lowest point for a while.
WHO'S HOT
The Sharks could have won last week's match if they had followed the example set by centre Phil Bailey. The unfashionable former Sea Eagle never gave up against the Raiders in a solid all-round game. He's now in the Blues' Origin side - a wonderful reward for ticker.
WHO'S NOT
Last year's new kid on the block is this year's dud. Harsh words, but unfortunately true when describing the situation with Warriors five-eighth Lance Hohaia. The young Kiwi could do no wrong in his debut season, but has struggled with the pace of the game in his second season. Coach Daniel Anderson has dropped him for this week, citing his inability to bust a tackle as the major problem. That was his major strength in 2002.
KEY MATCH-UPS
Stacey Jones v Brett Kimmorley
Jerry Seu Seu v Chris Beattie
Mark Tookey v Danny Nutley
LIKE TO SEE
The Warriors' forwards recapture their offloading ability. Without Guttenbeil and Lauitiiti in the line-up, offloads have been few and far bewteen for last year's grand-finalists which as been a major problem. The likes of Jones and Hohaia have been starved of any real second phase options as a result.
WOULDN'T LIKE TO SEE
Brett Kimmorley smirk when he misses an easy goal. He did it again last week in a match where his poor kicking proved the difference. Surely there is a more consistent goal-kicker amongst the Sharks' ranks.
WE THINK
The Warriors have stuffed around too much with their side and their forwards just don't posses the grunt to go the whole 80 minutes. The Sharks will be seething after losing last week and should be in the right frame of mind to win this one. Their props in Nutley and Beattie should provide the space for Kimmorley to dominate. Sharks by 8.
