nice analysis was die einzelnen quarters betrifft. tenor - you cant see past fedex cause he will be up for it..
Fed's Quarter
.......
Fed takes on Davydenko who has taken a set in both meetings. Last met 2004 2nd rnd, Fed lost his 2nd match (3rd rnd) to Nadal, and Davyd hasnt played hard court since, so this should be easier.
Have to prefer up-coming Mayer to Berdych, Mayer's game decent all round, but lacks experience and skills to pass Fed.
Volandri is very poor on hard, but Santoro will be most keen on concentrating on a doubles medal being too old to attend in 2008. Beating Volandri puts him against Robredo who defeated him recently and trails 0-4 H2H,, then its Fed, not much incentive for Santa.
Robredo will be challenged if asked to pronounce his opponents name, thats as far as it goes. Rob has too much hardcourt skill for Vlandri and H2H over Santa - he does seem to suffer from tournament fatigue, Cincin may have tired him, only has 1 set to his credit in 5 matches with Fed.
Srichaphan v Jo Jo -Srch dosnt seem todo well against serve volley, Jo Jo's serve only seems to work on some hardcourt surfaces, if it does he may go far.
Ljubicic at 25 in his peak years, preference over Srich and Jo Jo, 1st takes on Sargs who at 31 is past his best-.
Hrbaty has a 20th century 2-0 H2H over El Ayn whose loss to out-of-form Henman suggests an easy win for Hrbaty whose no mug if the match gets tough.
Dent was dropped from USA Davis cup for being unfit , he raises his game for Slams, a medal will go down well with Dad (Phil), and Nalbandian isnt fit, tho has the game to contain Dent. Any of these 3 could come thru, to face Ljubicic who has always done well in Davis Cup, the pressures that cause him to lose matches wont be present at the Olympics, making Ljub the percentage call to face Fed in the quarter.
Fed v Ljub H2H 3-3, Ljub winning the last on Swiss carpet in 2003 - Fed will be keen to accert superiority here (and finds Basel carpet difficult to play on).
Moya's quarter
At 28yrs old and rank 4 Moya is still avoiding the downward path of age, will be too old next Olympics, so will give his best. Plays well for DC, beat Scud on grass, presently top Spaniard.
Big problem is doesnt do well in Slams, tends to win ATP titles. Playing fatigue maybe the problem, and this is competative, he'll need to be very fit, latest results suggest he may not be or just holding back?
Starts by taking on Enqvist who leads 5-2 H2H, Moya winning both matches on clay, Enqvist has deteriorated since the last meeting in 2002, but he's fresh and will test Moya's hardcourt form, a close win for Moya.
Scud played well at World Champs, the team spirit providing the motivation, playing for Australia so Rochus wont be a problem, Moya's class will be.
Clement hasnt played much, Lapentti even less, fitness maybe the key, Clement preferred.
Pavel's recent form so very poor, Karlovic slowly improving will serve his way past Pavel, and take revenge on an unfit Clement.
Moya has beaten Karlovic on clay, trobled by Arthurs last week, if the big serve is working really well, 25 yrs old Karlovic may get the better - another tough match for Moya.
Massu played himself into some form in the Wold Team, an Guga;s hip is a problem, but he loves to play a big match, Massu will be spent if he wins.
Melzer will play odd shots to annoy Spadea who will keep returning them to annoy Melzer -both will be spent, so hopefully its Guga from these 4.
Calleri used to play well, Beck has his days - close, Calleri preferred.
Andreev is hyped, but dosnt play enough doubles to become top level, beat Schuettler on clay recently. Schuettler's year has been poor, returning slowly to form, better on hardcourt will take revenge.
For this quarter Schuettler he has the fitness needed , plus the usual Germen disaplined team. Karlovic tends to tire beep into a tournament, and Moya will have played too many hard matches, - so Schuettler may receive the Bonze losing to Fed at the semi's.
3rd Quarter whose?
Ferrero just returning from a lay-off needs practice play to defend his US Open final points, he dosnt want fast leftie Arazi to start with, likely tobe tough as Koubek at Wimbledon, Ferrero wont have much left, tho' enough to beat out-of-form Bjorkman or injured Fish.
Nieminens been layed off so long, the chances of Lu look good. Mirnyi and Volch meet the Bryans 2nd doubles match, so Max will concentrate on singles against Chela who should be better, latly isnt so good, Max prefered. Ferrero looks the call , any fatigue, and the beast who plays well in DC will take the win.
Keifer should have no problem with Voltchkov, or beating lowly Carraz whose up against 2500/1 outright Baghdatis .
X-man against Youzhny, the meeting of 2 weak minds, tho' different pressures here may well aid Malisse back to best.
Henman has a back problem, and Novak's forgotten how to play - so if the weak mind holds together, Malisse could emerge past Kiefer, and maybe too energetic for Ferrero or Max. - Lu must be the gamble.
4th quarter - what Gilbert didnt order.
Grosjean played well at wimbledon, then forgot, he maybe saved for this, if not Horna's gutsy enough to make a win, and to beat a likely tired Arthurs-unless his serve is A!, or the underperforming Hanescu.
Fel Lopez seems to wilt when the tough get going, Soderling's steady improvement and a good record on home soil is likely to see him thru.
Safin gets an easy task 1st up against fading Kucera, and likely too much for Soderling - but here Soderling's odd shots may frustrate the ungainly in the hot sun so the youth has a chance.
Gonzo takes on a 2500/1 home crowd, then its battling HT Lee or not so hot on hard surface Zabaleta. Gonzo does well on home soil and WT's, so the different pressure to ATP here may suit.
Ancic has a task to pass Haas, but his energy maybe enough, he got close to defeating A-Rod (who shouldnt be troubled by Saretta) at Wimbledon and will try again, with some decent crowd support may get close enough.
Passing A-Rod may give Ancic the confidence to take on Gonzo, even A-Rod wont find Gonzo easy, another tough match.
If he survives all this A-Rod has the slightly erratic Soderling or a hard playing Safin, who if going well will take a lot of stopping.
A-Rod has 8-0 H2H over Malisse, and trails Fed 7-1, his chances of survivng this quarter dont look too good, and the Gold out of reach unless Fed decides to win doubles too.
